Our island prepares for a nationwide status red storm warning tomorrow. The public is advised not to travel, to stay indoors, and to shelter in place. News outlets are estimating nearly half a million people will lose power. Schools will be closed.

  • Unsafe working conditions
  • Disruption and cancellations to transport
  • Many fallen trees
  • Impacts to communications networks
  • Cancellation of events
  • Structural damage
  • Wave overtopping
  • Coastal flooding in low-lying and exposed areas
  • DANGER TO LIFE

Storms remind us that we need a safe and sturdy refuge. The last thing you want in a storm is to be caught inside a fragile structure.

I can’t help but reflect on Jesus’ words, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

What do I build my life on?

  • the strength of my youth?
  • wealth and possessions?
  • personal achievement?
  • status?
  • politics?
  • human relationships?
  • self-reliance?
  • pleasure and comfort?

I’ve seen storms demolish all of those.

Personally, I’ve found nothing stronger to build on than the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and acceptance personified in the life and words of Jesus.

Our work is to trust The Worker.
